A Defence Of Connectionism Against The "Syntactic" Argument
نویسنده
چکیده
In “Representations without Rules, Connectionism and the Syntactic Argument”, Kenneth Aizawa argues against the view that connectionist nets can be understood as processing representations without the use of representation-level rules, and he provides a positive characterization of how to interpret connectionist nets as following representation-level rules. He takes Terry Horgan and John Tienson to be the targets of his critique. The present paper marshals functional and methodological considerations, gleaned from the practice of cognitive modelling, to argue against Aizawa’s characterization of how connectionist nets may be understood as making use of representation-level

Self-defence is everyone’s right. Based on this right, one can defend himself against any eminent threat, even if it cause the predator’s death. This ethical principle is an applicable principle in ethics in war. However, the principle of self-defence has been applied in other situation such as justification of abortion if mother’s life is threatened by her fetus. Judith Thompson is a philosoph...

Abstract Extracting semantic roles is one of the major steps in representing text meaning. It refers to finding the semantic relations between a predicate and syntactic constituents in a sentence. In this paper we present a semantic role labeling system for Persian, using memory-based learning model and standard features. Our proposed system implements a two-phase architecture to first identify...
متن کاملA Connectionist Model of Lexical and Contextual In uences on Ambiguity Resolution in Human Sentence Processing
The lexicalist model of human sentence processing (MacDonald et al. 1994) provides an account for the interaction of lexical frequency eeects with contextual information in the resolution of syntactic ambiguities. In this paper, we present an implementation of a connectionist network which evaluates the predictions of the lexicalist model for NP/S garden paths. Our network is trained using a co...
متن کاملWhy Fodor and Pylyshyn Were Wrong: The Simplest Refutation
This paper offers both a theoretical and an experimental perspective on the relationship between connectionist and Classical (symbol-processing) models. Firstly, a serious flaw in Fodor and Pylyshyn’s argument against connectionism is pointed out: if, in fact, a part of their argument is valid, then it establishes a conclusion quite different from that which they intend, a conclusion which is d...
متن کاملParadox and Relativism
Since the time of Plato, relativism has been attacked as a self-refuting theory. Today, there are two basic kinds of argument that are used to show that global relativism is logically incoherent: first, a direct descendent of the argument Plato uses against Protagoras, called the peritrope; and, second, a more recent argument that relativism leads to an infinite regress. Although some relativis...
